ULTRASOUND GUIDED SCLEROTHERAPY

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is a safe, non-surgical alternative for the treatment of varicose veins, which would typically require surgical removal. Treatments are similar to that of traditional sclerotherapy except that the ultrasound is utilized to assist in guiding the needle into veins that cannot typically be seen by the naked eye.

Side effects:

Uncommon:

Small ulcers may form at the injection site, which heal slowly over time and may leave a pale scar.
Pain, bruising or redness at the injection site, which can be reduced with the use of topical medications and the application of cold compress. The risk of bruising can be minimized prior to treatment by avoiding aspirin, aspirin containing products as well as some herbal supplements.

Rare:

It is possible to have an allergic reaction to the sclerosing solution used with treatment. To minimize the possibility of such reaction, a small test dose of the medication is administered approximately a week prior to the initiation of treatment. Possible reactions would include rash or redness at the injection site, which can easily be treated. More serious reactions are extremely rare.

Cost of ultrasound guided sclerotherapy varies depending on the number of treatments necessary to achieve desired results. Some insurance companies will pay for this procedure when it is performed on varicose veins that are symptomatic. Coverage varies greatly, so it is important that you check with your health insurance carrier prior to initiating any procedure.
